Flying into February with Poems, Readers Theater, & a Freebie

February is such a great month for poetry! I had so much fun writing poems about all the holidays and celebrations while revising my February poetry packet, "Flying into February with Poems". I also revised my Readers Theater script called "The Symbols of Valentine's Day." I love using poetry in the classroom to get all my students participating and interacting. It's a great reading activity that the whole class can do together even with the most differentiated group of students. With lots of practice students build confidence and fluency. Just click on the picture below to download the Preview to see all the poems and activities that are included. For each poem there is either a writing activity to include informative text, opinion piece writing, or poetry writing, or a literacy activity.
I've included 8 original poems about February, Groundhog Day, Valentine's day, Presidents' Day, and Black American History Month. Here is a sample of "February Is" which includes all the celebrations listed above.
Here's a sample of a Cinquain about Groundhogs. Students will also learn how to write a cinquain about another woodland animal.
Here is a sample of a Subject poem about George Washington. After learning the poem and how to write one, they will write one about Abraham Lincoln.
There is a poem for Valentine's Day and a Poem Book below called, "Valentine, Valentine."
Be sure to click on any of the pictures above to find out more about it. When you download the Preview you see sample pages of all the poems and activities.
I also revised my Readers Theater packet which you can check out by clicking on the picture below.
There are Character symbols for making headbands, a Daily Lesson Plan, and 2 differentiated scripts: one at the 2nd and the other at the 3rd grade reading levels.

Finally a freebie for all of my followers and viewers. I like to make thematic word sorts. It is a great way to help students learn vocabulary and become more fluent with it. This is a wonderful literacy center activity that can be used with my February Poem unit or anytime during the month of February. There is a whole group activity to access students understanding of Common nouns, Proper nouns and Compound Nouns. Then students will sort February words into the three categories of nouns and write their answers on their recording sheet. Just click on the picture below to download your free packet.
Thanks for all you do to make a difference for your students. Have a great February!
